7 Signs Your Blood Sugar Is Not Stable (Without a Blood Test)

I talk constantly about keeping blood sugar stable. Here is how you can tell whether yours is, before you ever get a blood test.
I talk about blood sugar stability constantly. What I have rarely explained is how a woman can tell whether her own blood sugar is stable, without waiting for a blood test.
So here are the signs I look for.
1. Feeling strange after a carbohydrate heavy meal
You finish a meal that was higher in carbohydrate and you feel slightly lightheaded, a little dizzy, perhaps shaky, sometimes with a stronger or faster heartbeat. That is your blood sugar rising quickly and then dropping.
2. Constant hunger
You do not feel full. Not after the meal, not after the snack. Real satiety is one of the most underrated signals in the body, and when blood sugar is unstable, it disappears.
3. Daily snacking urges
Particularly for something sweet, and particularly in the afternoon. That mid afternoon pull toward sugar is one of the most reliable signs there is.
4. Mood swings, and worse premenstrual symptoms
Blood sugar instability affects mood directly. It also makes premenstrual symptoms noticeably harder, which is why some women find their PMS worsens dramatically in the years when everything else is shifting too.
5. Water retention
Not inflammation on a lab report, but the inflammation you can feel. Waking in the morning feeling puffy and full of fluid. Insulin causes the kidneys to hold onto sodium, and water follows sodium.
6. Brain fog
Probably the most common of all. Losing the ability to concentrate for long stretches. Losing the ability to multitask. Your attention span becomes very short.
7. Energy that swings through the day
Fine for an hour, flat for the next, then hunting for something sweet.
How to confirm it properly
A continuous glucose monitor. Worn for one, two or four weeks, it shows you how your own body responds to your own food in real time. This is the single fastest way to learn your own pattern, and every woman's pattern is different. I wore one myself for a few months and it permanently changed how I understand my body.
Bloodwork. Fasting blood glucose tells you about that one day. HbA1c reflects your longer term average. Fasting insulin is the one usually left off the panel, and it is the one that matters most, because together with fasting glucose it allows us to calculate HOMA-IR and see whether insulin resistance is present.
An important nuance
Not every blood sugar problem is insulin resistance. Sometimes the diet is simply wrong. Sometimes movement is far too low. Sometimes stress is high and cortisol is disordered, and that alone destabilises glucose.
Which is why we investigate before we intervene.
Where to start today
- Protein within the first hour of waking
- Protein at every meal
- Three structured meals, no all day grazing
- A ten minute walk after eating
- Resistance training, because muscle pulls glucose out of the blood
